I tried to recreate the following icon for a tutorial, and it's not *exactly* the same colouring, but it's as close as I can get. (I merged the original file and can't remember all the steps exactly...doh.)

Anyway, for your viewing/amusement, I give you - a tutorial.

Please remember, this is for general colouring/quality guidelines only; please don't make exact replicas of my icon and claim them as your own.

This is all using PSP XI, but I should imagine it's transferable...none of it is too complicated. If you have any questions, just ask.

Going from this to Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting in 10 easy steps.

1) Find your picture. I used this one, which was lying around my harddrive.

2) Crop it. I try to crop in interesting ways, and it's not always easy - it's also quite easy to go too far into "interesting" and end up with something where you can't actually see what it is. Anyway, a rule of thumb is, don't put the subject of your icon right in the middle. It looks dull.

When cropping, keep an eye on the status bar at the bottom (helpfully pointed to by that big red arrow). When you're sizing out the crop box, the numbers in the status bar change, showing you the basic dimensions of what you're cropping. It doesn't matter how big it is, as long as the numbers match ie 230x230. That way, when you resize it, it doesn't look squashed up or dragged out.

3) Resize it to 100x100.

4) Sharpen it: Adjust > Sharpness > Sharpen

5) Use the soften brush (it should be in the toolbar down the side or at the top), set on size 3, hardness 25, step 1, density/thickness/opacity 100; smooth out forehead, cheeks, chest – avoiding her nose, lips, eyebrows, hair, edges of her face and clothes etc. Also smooth out the phone behind her so there’s no distractions.

6) Duplicate the bottom layer three times – set them all to Screen, with the top screen layer at 50% opacity.

7) Duplicate the bottom layer (not the Screen layers) twice and move both these layers above the Screen layers. Set to Soft Light. Set the top layer to 50% opacity.

8) Paste on this gradient:

9) Move it between the two Soft Light layers; set it to Soft Light, 30%.

10) Merge all layers. Save as .png file rather than .jpg by clicking the drop down menu underneath where you type in the file name.

Oooh! I know what I'm doing tonight. Expect scary attempts that probably will be hilarious!

Heh, before I looked at the steps I didn't realize you'd softened the phone, but it really does make a huge difference. Genius, you are, you little brat.

Hee. I expect to see the results!

Teehee. Well, thanks, I think! I just don't like having to look at a phone as well when there's Poppy to be had.

This is apparently a running commentary...

Okay, I'm sort of dense. I can't get the crop box status to show up, I had to re-open in another programme to get it. I'm sure it's v. obvious but how do you turn on that option?!

Nevermind, switching progs for awhile and switching back, FTW.

I've just learned what layers are and how to wank them. Dude. AWESOME. This looks cool.

WTH is a gradient. I mean, in idea I get it. But. BUT BUT.

Oh holy pasting wtfness. I used, btw,

to get this

I may tweak it a bit, but omg. I used like, layers and shit. Dude. You're the best.

Hmm I'm not sure the crop box status is something you can switch on or off...what program are you using?

Gradients are for the pretteh!

Heee well done! So proud. If you want we can have a Live Tutorial online sometime, try and work out that crop box thing over AIM.

I was reading the comment above and I can't seem to find the status bar either. I'm using Adobe Photoshop CS2...if you have any hints, please let me know.

Okay, well I don't have any Photoshop software on my computer...how about you size out a crop, any size, but don't double click on it yet, just leave it as if you were going to change the size of the crop or whatever. Then take a screenshot of it (there should be a print screen key somewhere on your keyboard: on mine I press Ctrl and then another key which has PrtSc on it), then minimize the picture and right-click, paste as new image - the screen shot should show up. Upload it to photobucket or any account of your choosing and I'll take a look, see if I can see where the crop dialogue is.

I found something similar to finding out the crop size. Thanks for the help though.
